EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORT |
Sporting clubs are faced with many challenges at the present time and are being encouraged to develop policies on a wide range of topics. The creation and implementation of these policies will hopefully make the club more inclusive and welcoming. It will also assist greatly in encouraging increased membership and sustainability. Those clubs who are fortunate enough to have inspirational leaders and strong committees can usually manage most of these matters very capably. These clubs share the workload and do not leave everything to one or two people. They also make sure that the policies are not just developed and left on the shelf, they actually become part of the fabric of the club. GippSport believes that to become an Inclusive and Welcoming Club you need to promote your club to everyone in the community. It involves offering an equal opportunity for all. There should be no discrimination based on income, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability or educational background. By adopting an access for all policy at your club, you will be providing many people with a fantastic opportunity to follow a sport of passion. Potential benefits to new participants include the development of new friendships, engagement in physical activity, feelings of respect and increase in self esteem. We are currently developing an “INCLUSIVE AND WELCOMING CLUBS PROGRAM” which we hope will assist clubs to tackle some of these issues. GippSport staff based around Gippsland will also be available to provide support and advice. We will keep clubs informed on our progress and look forward to many Gippsland sporting and recreation clubs embracing this concept. Barry Switzer - Executive Officer

GippSport link with Monash University |

VicHealth is working with a number of organisations across the state of Victoria to increase participation in physical activity. In 2007, VicHealth funded a total of 61 projects across the state through the Participation In Community Sport and Active Recreation Scheme (PICSAR) and the Active Participation Grants (APG). Of these 61 projects, 22 have been selected to participate in an in depth evaluation developed by Monash University and VicHealth. Four of these projects are involved with GippSport. GippSport's overarching program “Active Gippsland” has been selected as part of the PICSAR scheme evaluation and three APGs across Gippsland have also been selected. The PICSAR program is funded for a four year period and works towards increasing participation in sport and active recreation, providing opportunities to upskill volunteers and linking organisations within the community as a means of fostering partnerships to address community health and well being. The APG projects are funded for a period of three years and involve a range of groups including people with a disability, remote/rural communities and Indigenous communities. The projects are Kids Onside (Warragul), Activity Supermarket (Buchan, Cann River, Swifts Creek) and Physically Active Koori Kids (Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance).

Joy Martin started playing netball with the Glengarry Netball Club in 1967. It was called Women's Basketball at that time. Games were played on a variety of surfaces including grass, asphalt and sandy gravel. Joy was the secretary/treasurer of the club in 1974. However, it has been her long-time commitment to umpiring and coaching at the club that shows her passion for the club and the game. Joy continued to play with Glengarry for many years having only stepped down from being a player in the last couple of years. She started umpiring early in her netball career and continues to umpire each week in Traralgon and for Glengarry on match days. She has been a successful coach with the club at various times in her forty-year involvement with the club. Joy took up the coaching role mid season in 2007, as the coach at the time was unable to continue in the role. She is coaching again this season. Joy has also been a delegate for the club to the North Gippsland Football Netball league and a committee member at the Glengarry Football Netball Club and Glengarry Recreation Reserve. Congratulations to Joy for being a great volunteer for her club.

Outstanding athletes win March Gippstar Awards |
Triathlete Charlotte McShane won the March Senior Gippstar Award after an outstanding performance in the Australian Long Distance Championships at Jervis Bay in February where she won the under 20s female title. Charlotte competed against top Australian and overseas professionals, all much more experienced, and finished 5th female overall. She covered the 2 km swim, 83 km cycle and 20 km run in just 4 hours 17 min, despite hot conditions. Subsequent to her award nomination Charlotte has also won the Victorian U20 Olympic Distance Championship. The Gippstar Junior Award winner was high jumper Cameron Hughes, who won the Victorian U18 championship. Cameron's winning jump was 2.00 metres, a personal improvement of 5 cm. Cameron convincingly won the Championship, well clear of second the place-getter who cleared 1.90 metres. Gippstar Awards are awarded each month to a junior and senior Gippsland resident who has achieved great sporting success that month. More information, and details on making nominations, is available at www.sportgippsland.org.au

(Note that the costings were made in 2006). This document outlines the cost of the different court surfaces used for tennis, annual costs to maintain and a guide to how much a club needs to plan to have for replacement in the future. Club tip for this month |
Holding a Membership Drive A simple flyer is a great example of the sort of marketing tool community groups can employ at low cost but with the potential for very high rewards. Instead of waiting for new members to come to you, take your club to them! Create a flyer using the following guidelines:
Throw in some simple graphics and a photo or two to break up the text, tap a business supporter on the shoulder to provide you with paper and a photocopier, sign up some volunteers to do some pavement pounding and voila - you've got a membership drive up and running. For further information visit www.ourcommunity.com.au
