A WORD FROM THE STAFF |
The past couple of months have seen our organisation grow and develop even more relationships/partnerships in all areas across Gippsland especially through The Access for All Abilities Program (AAA). Reports at the monthly staff meeting are proving that we are getting out into ALL communities across Gippsland and meeting the needs of our target groups and sporting and recreation clubs. During the month of November, GippSport are offering sporting and recreation clubs the opportunity to attend a number of FREE workshops. These workshops include topics such as Fundraising and Sports Marketing, Club Planning, Effective Strategic Planning and more. Remaining workshops have been outlined in our Seminars and Training information below. GippSport has also celebrated another year of achievements, holding the Annual General Meeting on October 16 2007. Executive Officer, Barry Switzer and staff at GippSport described program achievements for the 2006/07 year and discussed changes in direction for the organisation. A report is available by contacting GippSport Head Office on 51358335 or on our web site www.gippsport.com.au
In celebrating the achievements of staff at GippSport, continuing Board member John Brookes OAM was presented with a certificate of appreciation for 15 years of outstanding service on the GippSport Board. During John's time on the Board he has seen GippSport role and responsibilities continue to grow and meet the needs of local communities across Gippsland within the Sport and Recreation industry. (See photo) There are a large number of projects which our staff are currently working on. At last count there were around 45 across Gippsland at the one time. We would like to inform you of another we are developing and advise that you watch this space for further information in the coming months ... Watch this Space – Coming soon to Gippsland……The Thank You Volunteers Program is a package of thank you cards available free of charge to all sporting clubs in Gippsland. Across Gippsland, volunteers work tirelessly to give their communities access to sporting opportunities. The program was developed as a strategy to recognise the important role that these volunteers play in our local sporting clubs.

Grants of up to $2500 are available to local sporting clubs, regional sporting leagues and associations and local active recreation clubs across Victoria, as part of VicHealth's Active Club Grants program. The Active Club Grants program aims to increase opportunities for physical activity, by promoting safety and overcoming barriers to participation such as a lack of equipment or training. “This is often the only barrier to participation,“ explained VicHealth's Chief Executive Officer, Todd Harper. “We need to be doing a lot more to increase opportunities for people to participate, remembering that regular physical activity not only protects against many illnesses, it also makes us mentally healthy, alert and resilient against the stresses of modern life.” Active Club Grant guidelines and application forms are available from local Council Offices, Regional Sports Assemblies and State Sporting Associations. CLUB SUCCESS STORIES IN GIPPSLAND |
Inclusive and Welcoming Clubs |
| GippSport has been supporting the newly arrived Sudanese Community to access a range of sporting options in the Latrobe Valley and Wonthaggi. In Morwell, 12 young people have begun playing Basketball on a Monday in a range of age groups and teams. Morwell Basketball Association has been most understanding and has assisted these young people to join teams and link with some supported transport options. It is a great example of a club becoming more inclusive and welcoming and reaping the benefits of 12 new members. Sport has a range of health benefits as we know, but is also a great way to meet new people, build friendships and gain an understanding of our culturally diversity. “It has been great to watch the young Sudanese players feel welcome in teams, see young players, coaches and the whole basketball community accept and encourage their participation. It has been most rewarding,” said GippSport program Coordinator David Roberts. With over 200 Sudanese in the Latrobe Valley there is much more work to be done to offer further sporting opportunities to this community. One young lady is in the process of trying volleyball and with the soccer season not far around the corner, we should have a big group looking to join a local team. GippSport would like to thank the clubs and volunteers involved as well as Sports Without Borders (www.sportswithoutborders.net.au ) who have assisted with financial support to cover some venue, fees and uniform costs. If your club would like to become more welcoming and Inclusive contact us at GippSport

Risk Management |
In 2005 Tennis Victoria provided a CD ROM to all affiliated clubs about Risk Management. In many clubs this is probably filed away and may never have been looked at. This is a great resource and provides useful information including specifications for tennis court layout, the types of risks that may be present and some ideas to deal with them and a great risk identification checklist. Completing the checklist can identify action that may be required and can guide you in completing a grant application. If you can't locate yours, contact Jake McMinn at Tennis Victoria on 84208420 or email jake.mcminn@tennisvic.com.au
