Volunteer Recognition May Award -
Gavin Foenander |
When Gavin Foenander joined the Gormandale Cricket Club in the early 80’s little did he know he would end up President of the club for well over a decade. Gavin is regarded as the “heart and soul” of the club and has recently played a leading role in re-locating the club from the small community of Gormandale into a newly established turf wicket in Traralgon. “We were really sorry to have to leave Gormandale as our club has a proud history but we simply could not field junior teams due the lack of numbers and our club was heading for extinction. We decided the only way to retain the club was to re-locate and we obtained incredible support from sponsors, Latrobe City Council, Cricket Victoria and club members to install a new turf wicket at Stoddart Park in Traralgon,” explained Gavin. Gavin has not only been President for many years, he was also the curator of the Gormandale wicket and travelled thousands of kilometres over the years from his home in Traralgon out to Gormandale at his own expense. He always ensures that his players are well looked after and on many occasions has been seen cooking food to sustain his beloved Gormandale Tigers after training. He also finds the time to carry out the role of Vice-President for the Traralgon and District Cricket Association. He leads an innovative committee which comprises former players, supporters, life members and some current players. Gavin is anxious to ensure that as much workload as possible is shared and that current players make a contribution off the field as well. Gormandale is a Good Sports Club and also attempts to engage player’s partners and families in social activity. The club has streamlined its operations this season with all committee members on line to receive minutes, agendas and reports of all meetings and social activities. Action plans are developed and all individual responsibilities are clearly outlined and documented. “The committee has done a great job this season and it great to have a blend of experience and newcomers on the group. We still have a lot to achieve but we will get there as long as we share the responsibilities,” said Gavin. With all of the challenges of leadership Gavin is still able to contribute significantly on the field by winning the club’s B Grade Champion Award as well as the batting average and aggregate. He also played his 300th club game during the season and was awarded the prestigious Graeme “Mumbles” Membrey Memorial Award for Best Clubman. Gavin became a Life Member of the club in 1996 and continues to contribute. His greatest reward however was seeing the A Grade team win the 2006-07 Premiership without losing a game and the B Grade team wining back-to- back flags. “It has been a remarkable season for the Gormandale Eastcoast Tigers and we are really looking forward to next season as we develop our junior set-up and look to building a pavilion in our new setting. We will certainly be relying on a lot of volunteer support like every other community sporting club,” concluded a very enthusiastic and proud President. Gavin Foenander puts countless hours into his club all year round and has done so for many years. Doubtless there are many clubs who have volunteers like him who are the backbone of the club.

Traralgon Swimmers Take Home Medals at Nationals |
Eleven Traralgon swimmers have returned from the Australian Age Group Championships in Perth with some outstanding results. Head Coach, Brian Ford was full of praise for his team. “To have 11 swimmers from our Club compete at this meet is in itself an achievement, but to come out with 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 9 Finals, and 11 Out of Gippsland records is great reward for the whole team and the hard work put in by them and their support crew. They should all be very proud of themselves”. Best performed was 15 year old Jeremy Meyer who won Gold in the 100 metre Breaststroke (1.06.64) and Silver in the 200 metre event (2.23.13). Jeremy is the first swimmer ever from Gippsland to win an Age National title and as a result of his performance was selected as part of the Australian All Star Flippers team. Jeremy will now attend a National Breaststroke Camp from the 20th to 26th May on the Sunshine Coast training and living with the nation’s best breaststrokers and take part in the Trans Tasman tour from the 1st to 6th July where all the gold medalists at Nationals compete in six (6) events over 6 days taking in Sydney, Gosford and finally Canberra at the AIS.

The Keep Fit Don’t Sit Program is well underway with 8 school visits already conducted in the Latrobe Valley. Latrobe City Pacers player Vashon Weaver has lead the school visits in a range of physical activities and games. The program promotes the benefits of active and healthy lifestyles to primary school students in Grades 3 & 4 and encourages involvement in physical activities outside of school.
A further 8 school visits are planned with a Grand Final Celebration Day planned on Thursday June 21. All students participating in program from the 16 schools will complete tally sheets to record the amount of physical activity they do over a two week period, from May 28 to June 8. GippSport has taken an active role in the program and has been providing students with information on how to get involved in local sporting clubs, ensuring that the program has some long-term benefits. Harmony 8s Day |
Over 300 primary aged children from schools in East Gippsland, Wellington and Latrobe were participants in the annual Harmony 8s Day held at the Wy Yung Football/Netball Club on Wednesday April 18 and Maryvale Recreation Reserve in Morwell on Friday 20th April. The program which has been developed by Cricket Victoria focuses on getting young Indigenous children actively participating in cricket through a modified version of cricket as well as promoting and encouraging healthy lifestyles through cricket.
The Indigenous children from various schools were asked to bring along a friend from school to partner them for the day of competition. Throughout the day there were three rounds of cricket played, both boys and girls teams and a final series nearing the end of the day. The children displayed great sportsmanship through the day and were supported by their school teachers in scoring each game. Morgan Cameron, Program Coordinator for GippSport said that “The event was a fantastic opportunity for local children to get involved in cricket and play in a fun and relaxed environment amongst their peers”. “GippSport were proud to support the program, Cricket Victoria and Sport and Recreation Victoria and hope to provide further assistance in junior development programs throughout the region, not only through cricket”. Cricket Victoria and GippSport would like to thank the Bairnsdale and Churchill Lions Club, Sport and Recreation Victoria, Barry Firebrace and Melanie Jones (Indigenous State Cricket representatives) and the local schools for their support on the day.

Boccia comes to Bass Coast |
Boccia is an indoor sport for players of all abilities and is similar to the European game of bocce. Soft coloured balls are used, and they can be thrown, kicked or rolled by a ramp. Nearest to the "jack" is the winner. On Monday May 7 a promotional day for Boccia was held at the Wonthaggi YMCA and involved over 30 participants. Among those to attend the day were four paralympians and a number of Boccia Victoria representatives. It is the aim of the Wonthaggi YMCA and GippSport that as early as mid June we could have a regular time slot for this fantastic game. “With support from Bass Coast Shire we were able to purchase equipment to get the game up and running, so there is nothing stopping us”. Boccia has been running in the Latrobe Valley for over two years now as part of the Access For All abilities program. If you would like any further information regarding this great game please contact Mark Lindsay at GippSport on 0428 358 335 or mark@gippsport.com.au

Sudanese Soccer Team Success |
| After identifying the need to engage the rapidly growing Sudanese Community in physical activity in the Bass Coast area, GippSport set about researching the needs in regards to sport and recreation pursuits. Soccer was found to be their main interest and in late November of 2006 GippSport with the assistance of organisations such as Gippsland Multi Cultural Service, Bass Coast Council, Wonthaggi Police, Wonthaggi Soccer Club, Rural Aid for Refugees and the YMCA, we were able to organise an event to further engage to Sudanese Community through Soccer.
Over 70 people attended the event and provided organisations involved with the opportunity to speak with young Sudanese men in particular about sporting prospects in the area. GippSport was fortunate enough to receive equipment and uniforms from Football Federation Victoria, in order to support the development of a Sudanese Soccer team in Wonthaggi. The team won its first match recently and continue to engage themselves in physical activity and the community. This success and relationship building within the community and involved organisations has seen the development of a Women’s Sudanese Netball team. The team will join the local competition in Wonthaggi and with the assistance of Netball Victoria it has ensured that they will have uniform and equipment to be able to participate on a weekly basis. It is great to see an inclusive sports club and an inclusive community!

FEEDBACK |

Club tip for this month |
How do you communicate information to your club members? Clubs have a variety of methods. One is to create a Group Email so that the secretary can forward information to other members. Members can decide if the information is relevant to them or just delete the email. Many of the people you send the information to belong to other organisations and in this way information can be shared across a large number of people. Remember to use the Blind Copy (BC) function when you send emails to lots of people. This stops email addresses from being displayed and will help stop SPAM mail from getting access to email addresses.
