Volunteer Recognition Scheme |
Betty Timmins from Glengarry has been involved as a volunteer with sporting clubs and associations for many years. Betty was instrumental in establishing the Latrobe Valley Ladies Cricket Association in 1984. Betty was the secretary from 1984 until the association ceased in 1990. Betty had a 30 year involvement with the Latrobe Valley Women's Softball Association . Betty began playing in the 1960's and continued until the association folded in the 1990's. Betty also coached and umpired for many years and was rewarded with Life Membership in 1991. Betty continues to be involved with badminton after starting to play in the 1960's. She is a Life Member of the Latrobe Valley Badminton Association and has a Service Award from Badminton Victoria. She coached many young people in the Glengarry and Toongabbie areas in the 1980's and 1990's. She has been the Score Secretary for the Latrobe Valley Badminton Association over a number of years. She assisted in the reestablishment of junior badminton in the Latrobe Valley in the 1980's. Betty continues to play badminton in veterans and local competitions. Betty started playing netball when she was eight years old. She has been playing for 63 years! She was awarded Life Membership of the Traralgon Netball Association in 2006 and of the Glengarry Netball Club in 2004. She was the secretary of the Traralgon Netball Association for three years and the president for 12 years. She has been the Traralgon Netball Association 11 and under squad coach for nine years and the Glengarry Netball Club junior coach for 13 years. When Betty began junior coaching at Glengarry there was one team — now there are eight. She is currently a committee member with the Glengarry Football Netball Club. She received a Gippstar award in 1995 as a Special Achiever. She has also received awards from Netball Victoria in 1994 and 2004. Betty has also umpired netball for over 40 years. Why does she do it? Betty believes that you need to give back to the sports that you participate in and believes she is no different to the many thousand volunteers She is able to play sport because there are clubs supported by volunteers that make sport available. If you didn't have presidents, umpires and coaches you wouldn't have the opportunities to play. She also loves seeing the enjoyment that people, particularly children get from playing sport and being involved with teams and clubs. Betty is looking forward to catching up with a number of the young people she has coached over the many years at the Glengarry Netball Club 40 year reunion on Saturday 7 July 2007. FEEDBACK |

Club tip for this month |
A great way to get people to your Annual General Meeting is to hold it on your presentation night! This is a particularly good method for small clubs and it is also a great way to communicate to members, parents and others involved in your club what you have been up to for the past 12 months.
