A word from the staff ... |
The staff here at GippSport hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday season and a much needed rest, despite the drought and recent fire dangers throughout Gippsland. First of all we welcome David Roberts to the position of Program Coordinator, located in Moe. David has a wide range of experience and will be a valued member of the organisation. In 2007, the GippSport team is hoping to provide support and advice to local sports and recreation clubs through the Supporting Country Sport program (SCS) and ensure to provide sport and active recreation opportunities to communities throughout Gippsland. Currently, the GippSport team is focused on planning for the organisation’s future and gaining VicHealth funding for the Participation in Community Sport and Active Recreation (PICSAR) program until 2011. GippSport have also been invited to tender for the Access for All Abilities (AAA) program, which has kept the team on their toes. The staff wish to thank those organisations for their support and help in this process.
We will endeavour to meet the needs of the communities through sport and active recreation, and are open to any feedback you wish to provide so that we can facilitate programs and projects to best suit and meet your community and your clubs needs in the future. As we have developed an evaluation survey for the GippSport newsletter, we would appreciate it if you could take some time to complete it when it is sent out to your club shortly. We look forward to working with you in 2007. - the Team at GippSport

Exercise cuts smokers chance of cancer |
Sydney Morning Herald, December 17, 2006 Women who smoke may be able to reduce their lung cancer risk with exercise, a new study shows. But the investigators caution that any relative benefit is dwarfed by the benefits gained from kicking the habit. In the study, women who reported high levels of physical activity were 23 per cent less likely to develop lung cancer than those who were the least active, report Dr. Kathryn H. Schmitz of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and colleagues. And among women who smoked, greater activity was tied to a 28 per cent lower lung cancer risk, while women who were ex-smokers showed a 37 per cent lower risk with more activity. Aust. Sports Foundation – an alternative fundraising avenue |
Non-profit sporting organisations may register a sport-related project/s with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) to assist their fundraising efforts. The ASF is listed in the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, enabling donations of $2 or over to the ASF to be tax deductible. The ASF is the only sporting organisation listed in the Act. While donations must be made payable to the ASF, donors may nominate a registered project as a preferred beneficiary of their donation. Tax deductibility can be an additional incentive for prospective donors. Non profit sporting organisations (project organisations) can use their ASF-registered project as their sole avenue of fundraising or use it to complement other fundraising strategies. Project types that can be registered under the SPORT INCENTIVE PROGRAM

GOOD SPORTS UPDATE |
| The Good Sports Program (Funded through the Australian Drug Foundation) was designed to assist sporting clubs to implement alcohol management activities and policies. Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an important message to your members and the community. It indicates that your club promotes a responsible attitude towards alcohol and provides a safe environment for players, members, families and supporters. It is recognised that many sporting clubs depend on the revenue from alcohol sales to finance club activities. The Australian Drug Foundation acknowledge this and do not expect clubs to not sell alcohol, they are merely looking at providing direction and resources for clubs to manage the use of alcohol responsibly. Some of the benefits of the Good Sports Program include:
It is acknowledged that many licensed clubs rely on their bar sales for much needed revenue. The Good Sports Program is not about trying to 'dry up' clubs and loosing revenue, but merely asking clubs to accept their legal and social responsibilities in ensuring a duty of care for their members. GippSport can assist your sporting organisation in providing member access to Responsible Serving of Alcohol (RSA) courses, Liquor Licensing Act sessions and publicity through media releases to local newspapers once accreditation is received. To become a Good Sports Club, contact a GippSport Program Co-ordinator
