A WORD FROM THE STAFF

trim

Another year has flown by and it is pleasing to report that GippSport is well on the way to achieving the targets set for the 2007-08 financial year.

GippSport is funded by VicHealth to facilitate the Participation in Community Sport and Active Recreation (PICSAR) Program. Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) provide government funding to GippSport for the Access for All Abilities (AAA) Program and the Supporting Country Sport Program. This funding enables GippSport to employ eight people on a full-time basis in offices located at Moe/Newborough, Sale, Bairnsdale and Wonthaggi. GippSport has a service agreement with all funding providers which sets out what we intend to achieve in each financial year. We are accountable to VicHealth and SRV and we report to them on a regular basis.

The Australian Drug Foundation provides a minimal amount of funding for GippSport to deliver the Good Sports Program and we also have an agreement with Tennis Victoria to support the Regional Development Officer Program.

As a result of the above funding and program objectives we have established many partnerships across Gippsland as we seek to improve the health and well being of people through participation in sport and active recreation.

The GippSport staff will be taking a well deserved break and all offices will be closed from Monday 24 December 2007 until Friday 4 January 2008.

On behalf of the GippSport we hope you have a peaceful Christmas and a great year in 2008.

Cross Cultural Training

trim

2008 looks set to be a busy year with many clubs interested in taking up welcoming and inclusive training. The training is designed to encourage everyone to become involved in sport and recreation. Clubs have started to undertake parts of the training and have been keen to get out and get more people attracted to their club.

If your club would like to get involved or would like further information on the training, please contact GippSport on (03) 51 358335.

Workshops

trim

During November and into early December GippSport delivered 12 workshops covering topics such as marketing, fundraising, planning and risk management. The sessions, held throughout Gippsland were well attended. The feedback from participants indicated that the workshops were well presented. The topics were relevant for sporting and recreation clubs.

Special thanks to those who supported these workshops including our two fantastic presenters Anthony Bowd (VicSport) and Katherine Cousins (Unique Management Solutions).

Sessions planned for East Gippsland and Wellington were cancelled. Watch this space for new workshop dates in 2008.

CLUB SUCCESS STORIES IN GIPPSLAND

trim

Drouin Cricket Club wins Award

trim

Congratulations to the Drouin Cricket Club on winning the Club and Organisational Award at the “Go For Your Life” awards this year. The Drouin Cricket Club is an outstanding example of a thriving and inclusive local cricket club.

The club embraces players and members from all walks of life and with all levels of ability. As well as the traditional junior through to senior divisions for males, there are also a number of girl's teams and 24 "no boundaries" cricketers with a disability.

All members are encouraged to socialise together and that strong sense of community sees them remain with the club for a number of years. Members are kept up-to-date through the club's website and regular newsletters. The club also holds regular reunion events to encourage past players and members to stay involved.

During the past five years, the club has implemented a plan to improve its structure and management. They have clearly documented the different roles within the club, which has improved the transition process dramatically when new people become involved. As the club continues to change and grow, the organisational structure and financial management practices also evolve.

FEEDBACK

trim

Club tip for this month

trim

Are you counting down the time until your sport begins again and thinking of starting pre-season training? Why wait. Begin your pre-season training now.

Pre-season training tips:

  • Staying motivated can be difficult during the pre-season. Ask a friend to train with you, or arrange a group to train together.
  • Increase the workload of your training gradually. Slowly increasing the intensity, volume and duration of your training program will make it easier in achieving a higher level of fitness and reduce the risk of injury during the season.
  • Be cautious of over-training, especially when the start of the playing season draws closer. Over-training can fatigue the body and can compromise your fitness and ability. Avoid heavy training loads, take adequate rest periods and ensure there is appropriate supervision, including a qualified first aider.

Important points to avoid injuries whilst training:

  • Wear the correct safety equipment during all training activities
  • Begin each session with a warm up and end sessions with a cool down, including stretching
  • Be realistic in your goals
  • Build your times, distances and weights gradually
  • Do not train with an injury
  • Listen to your body. If you are finding the training too difficult reduce the duration and intensity of the sessions.
