Help at hand for sports clubs following floods

trim

Local sport and recreation clubs affected by the Gippsland floods may be eligible to receive assistance through Sport and Recreation Victoria. An emergency grant is available to help clubs replace essential sports equipment lost or destroyed in the recent flood event.

There is strong evidence to support the fact that sport and recreation clubs play an important role in smaller communities, particularly after a significant event such as the floods. Clubs provide both a place where people can come together to discuss their issues with others who share similar experiences, and also a place where they can put their problems aside and throw themselves into an enjoyable activity for a couple of hours. It is therefore important that we ensure clubs are also assisted to get back on their feet after the floods, so that they can fulfill this invaluable social role.

Grants are available to help replace essential items such as balls, bats, pads, helmets, nets, equestrian jumps, fishing rods and reels, gymnastics mats and also first aid equipment. Funding for up to 50 percent of the replacement cost of the damaged equipment may be provided to successful applicants.

Application forms and guidelines are available online. Directly link here, or go to www.grants.dvc.vic.gov.au and use the Grant Finder link to find the details.

Clubs are required to lodge their applications within three months of the flood event, complete with quotes and evidence of the damage (eg. photos, newspaper reports).

Volunteer Recognition Scheme - Robbie Mitchell

trim

Robbie Mitchell has manned the Inverloch Kongwak Football and Cricket Clubs scoreboard for 40 years. He has never missed a game and the new electronic scoreboard has been named after him. He has been commended by Queen Elizabeth and former AFL chief Wayne Jackson for his outstanding contribution to the club and the community.

On top of his Saturday scoring tasks, Robbie, an epileptic, spends Thursday evenings studying the teams for the following week's game and sends these lists through to all media outlets in South Gippsland.

Robbie is understandably proud of what he offers the club through his voluntary service. “Do you know how many matches I've missed?” he asked. He paused for dramatic effect, before showing a closed fist. “Absolutely none,” he said, chuckling.

Working With Children - checks for sports clubs start 2008

trim

The compulsory WWC Check is being phased in over five years.

When you need to apply for a Check depends on the year that your category of child-related work is being phased in. To work out when it is time to apply, check the table in the PDF document. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required. Link to Acrobat downloads for versions for different operating systems.)

If you fall into more than one category of child-related work, you should apply under whichever category comes first.

Example: Clubs, associations or movements (including of cultural, recreational or sporting nature) whom provide services or conduct activities for childre, or directed at children, or whose membership is mainly comprised of children must apply in Year 3, ie, between 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009.

Assessing sports ground safety

trim

A recent University of Ballarat study has reviewed and evaluated issues relating to turf sports grounds and surface conditions, and their possible relationship to sports safety.

The study has highlighted significant limitations in linking injuries to ground conditions and the reliability and validity of currently available measurement methods.

Despite these limitations, it is clear that both local government authorities and sporting associations/clubs should assess the conditions of their grounds on a regular basis.

The first approach involves a pre-game and pre-training inspection of sports grounds for hazards that are likely to cause injury. This should be conducted by individual clubs before all training sessions and competing clubs prior to the first use of the ground on match day.

The second approach involves the weekly inspection of sports grounds by the relevant LGA, with the specific purpose of inspecting the ground surface and surrounds for its suitability for play. The findings should then be linked to the maintenance program in place for that sports ground.

The full research report, entitled “Sports Ground Conditions and Injury Risk — Implications for Sports Grounds Assessment Practices in Victoria”, is on the Sport and Recreation Victoria website or go to www.sport.vic.gov.au/ and step through the links to Publications.
