3 April 2008 - Community Update, April edition now on line

The latest Community Update is now available. This edition includes Gippsland news and events as well as details about club resources and grants.

We are also conducting a survey about the newsletter as we wish to improve its usefulness to its readers. [This link has since closed.] Your comments would be appreciated.

 

2 April 2008 - Program Coordinator position - we have a vacancy at Bairnsdale

GippSport has a full time vacancy for a person to service East Gippsland.

Please refer to the position description for the nature of the position and the skills and duties requirements. Applicants will need to address the key selection criteria listed. The closing date is 18 April. [Links to the position description have since been closed.]

2 April 2008 - Club Update

GippSport sends out regular newsletters and grant information to clubs in Gippsland.  To ensure our database is kept up to date please complete our on-line form with your club's contact information.  Only one person per club should respond, so please discuss with your club the most appropriate person to receive this information and be our primary contact. 20 March 2008 - AFL football and cricket dual coaching course in Bairnsdale

GippSport is supporting a coaching course which is recognised by both sports. The course will be held 5 - 6 April, with registrations closing on Friday 28 March. See our media release for more details about the course.

 

18 March 2008 - Are you the next Alicia Molik or Leyton Hewitt?

The Central Gippsland Tennis Region seeks aspiring players to represent the region in a number of events during the year.

21 February 2008 - Our latest newsletter, Community Update now on line

The latest Community Update is now available. Once again we have included some club resources and grants information which we hope will be useful

There is also Gippsland news and a number of events or promotions coming up. We hope you find this edition useful, and we welcome your comments and feedback.

 

21 January 2008 - Sports injuries are preventable!

This is the message promoted by Smartplay. Every year one in 17 Australians suffer a sports injury, although 50 % of them may be preventable.

Smartplay provides sport-specific fact sheet on preventing injuries. The latest are for hockey, squash, and tennis. For fact sheets on other sports, visit the Smartplay resources list.

 

21 January 2008 - Gaming, lottery, raffle and lucky envelope regulations

The Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation (VCGR) is responsible for the regulation of gambling in Victoria. In February, it will be running information sessions in Bairnsdale to explain regulations and licencing requirements for some of the more popular fund-raisers.

21 December 2007 - Community Update - our latest newsletter released

Our final Community Update for 2007 has been released. Although our Christmas editions are usually shorter, you will still find a lot of recent news, as well as resources to assist clubs. The next edition will be in February 2008.

  • last working day in all offices is 21 December, except Sale which is already closed
  • Newborough and Bairnsdale offices resume on 7 January
  • Sale and Wonthaggi offices resume on 21 January

 

23 November 2007 - Our latest newsletter, Community Update now on line

The latest Community Update is now available. This is a large edition, and includes a number of new resources and ideas which may be useful to clubs. We hope that you find it useful.

We are also happy to remind you that if there are items in the newsletter which you need clarification on, or maybe a little bit of help getting started with, please feel free to contact our staff.

 

5 November 2007 - Joseph Chatziconstantis & Sophie Vickers win GippSport Scholarships

Joseph Chatziconstantis and Sophie Vickers have won GippSport Most Disciplined Player Scholarships. Joseph, who plays with the Morwell Tigers Junior Football Club, and Sophie, a junior tennis player with the Bairnsdale club, have each won an award of $200 with another $50 for their clubs.

The citations for the award are for a player who shows a positive attitude and who sets an excellent example to other juniors. Both Joseph and Sophie have shown outstanding dedication.

Many Gippsland clubs are involved in the Most Disciplined Player scheme and provide regular awards to their members. More details are on our MDP page.

 

26 October 2007 - November is a month of vital club development seminars / training

There is a large number of invaluable club and community group sessions available next month.

In South and West Gippsland we are involved with sessions on club goal setting and achievement. For those who attend, you can expect to find a lot of interesting discussion and ideas on how to make your club a better one. Look for repeats in other parts of Gippsland next year.

Baw Baw Shire has a free "Demystifying Risk Management" session on 14 November. It's a vital topic for everyone with a committee role. And for clubs looking for funds for projects, consider the "Intensive Winning Grants Workshop" in Melbourne later in the month.

 

24 October 2007 - GippSport Board strengthened at AGM

Ricky Ross will continue as the GippSport Board chairperson after his election at last week's AGM. He will be supported by new Board member Colin Robson, who has work experience in the sport, recreation, and personal support services areas.

All six Gippsland municipalities have appointed Board representives with professional roles in sport and recreation. Given GippSport's large service area, their knowledge and experience is a valuable contribution to the Board's work.

At last week's AGM, continuing Board member John Brookes OAM was presented a certificate of appreciation for 15 years outstanding service on the GippSport Board, including service as chairperson. During his time Mr Brookes has seen GippSport's role and responsibilities grow substantially.

 

22 October 2007 - GippSport Annual Report available

Following our Annual General Meeting last week, the GippSport Annual Report is now available. The report describes our program achievements for the year, including recent changes of direction. Please note that financial statements have been omitted, but further information is available from our office.

The Report is available in PDF format only, so Adobe Acrobat Reader is required. The file size is 388 kB.

 

2 October 2007 - Our latest Community Update newsletter now available

The latest Community Update contains our usual sports and programs news items, only this month there's it bit more of it.

We are constantly looking for ways which our information might be useful. This month we have added the grants resources lists which we use ourselves (see the item "Funding opportunities to look out for"). You may get more of an idea about the grants coming up in the future, even if they are not available now.

 

17 September 2007 - Football & netball workshops - skills for all the family

The AFL are offering a workshop day to enhance the skills of coaches, trainers, umpires and club administrators. Both football and netball will be provided for. It will be in Newborough on 21 October.

Kids' activities will run during the day with football clinics run by AFL players, along with ball-based games. The day is free for those with an affiliated club. Registration and contact details are on our Calendar page.

 

5 September 2007 - New grants for building or updating facilities - close soon

The Victorian Government has announced the Community Facilities Funding Program which supplements the Victorian Community Support – Strengthening Communities Program that we previously advertised.

Clubs or organisations interested in funds for building or facilities need to be aware that applications must be lodged soon through local councils, whereas the Strengthening Communities Program grants have no strict date..

Minor facilities grants of up to $60,000 are available for improving or developing facilities. Local contributions are required. Check our Grants page, which has more Community Facilities Funding Program information and links.

 

24 August 2007 - Relay Race Challenge in Sale

Businesses or community groups are encouraged to put together teams of runners (4 per team) for the Wellington Business & Community Challenge. Each relay leg will cover a 3.3 kilometre course around Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt.

The event is will be run over two sessions on Wednesday 24 October, at lunch time and evening. Apart from a beautiful course and an incentive to improve your fitness, proceeds will go to a local charity.

21 August 2007 - Central Gippsland Tennis web site launch

This evening a new Gippsland tennis web site will be launched. The site is for the Central Gippsland Tennis Regional Council, which is the umbrella body for local associations and clubs.

The site will provide information about tennis within the region, particularly for competition and organisational issues.

Tennis Victoria has supported the site's development, as regional councils have an important role in the advancement of country tennis. GippSport has also assisted.

 

13 August 2007 - August edition of Community Update newsletter released

Our latest Community Update is now available on-line. As usual, we provide information on grants and club resources. We also advise on the Working With Children Checks, which will involve many clubs from next year.

Well deserving of a special mention here is the extraordinary 40 year volunteer record of Robbie Mitchell for the Inverloch Kongwak Football and Cricket Clubs. The full story, and more, are in Community Update.

 

7 August 2007 - Sport Development for Women Grants for 2008 training

The grants have just been offered and will be open until 1 October. Grants cover training programs for women, during 2008, which will enhance their abilities across most areas of sports administration and participant support.

Funding of up to $1500 is available. Full details are at the DVC site.

 

26 July 2007 - James Hill appointed as our second AAA Program Co-ordinator

We are pleased to announce that James Hill will commence with us next week as our second staff member in the Access for All Abilities (AAA) Program. James will be based in Bairnsdale and cover our East Gippsland AAA operations.

James and Elke Timm (at our Newborough office) will be busy in the coming days in establishing the foundations for the Gippsland-wide AAA program. Further information will be provided from this site.

 

26 July 2007 - Help for clubs with flood damage losses

The Victorian government provides grants to assist clubs to replace equipment which has been lost in the floods. Funding of up to 50% of replacement cost may be available.

Essential club equipment, safety, and first aid equipment will be the main items. Clubs need to be aware that applications need to be made within 3 months of the loss.

17 July 2007 - Elke Timm appointed as AAA Program Co-ordinator

GippSport is delighted to announce the appointment of Elke Timm to the Access for All Abilities Program. Ms Timm will work from the Moe/Newborough office, commencing there later this week.

The AAA program seeks to build the capacity of the sport and recreation sector to enable increased active participation opportunities for people with disabilities. Program information will be progressively added to this web site.

 

17 July 2007 - What is Lifeball?

Lifeball is a team game with features common to netball, but conducted at walking pace. It's a thinking game, designed for safety. There are skill and fitness components, although it's suitable for people of any fitness level.

“By playing this game it helps you stay coordinated and flexible and it even reduces stiffness and improves balance. The reason I like playing Lifeball is because it's a game that everyone can play (even the grandchildren), and as a senior myself, I love the fact that Lifeball is an easy walking team game that helps keep my memory keen. We all need motivation to exercise but Lifeball is such fun that you can't wait to play another game.” - Colleen Wilson-Lord.

12 July 2007 - Promoting your organisiation

From membership to funding, skills in marketing and promotion are necessary if you wish to extend the reach of your club.

GippSport is supporting a Marketing you Message workshop which will be conducted by Baw Baw Shire later this month. There you will learn the secrets of successful marketing and how to apply them in your organisation.

The workshop will be held in Warragul at 7pm on 25 July. Register by 23 July with Yvonne Magyar, 5625 023, or by email.

 

10 July 2007 - Telstra grants for football (3 codes), swimming, surf life saving and athletics

The Telstra Assistance Fund offers equipment grants to clubs, but the closing date is soon - 1 August.

The sports provided for are rugby league, football (soccer), Australian rules, swimming, surf life saving, and athletics.

9 July 2007 - Mentoring - an effective way to get volunteers for club roles

We are promoting a SportEd workshop which will held in Traralgon next week (Monday 16 July) to promote mentoring in your club. This can be an effective way of having people take on voluntary roles. The workshop will explain how it works, how to set it up in your club, and will provide you with additional resources.

The workshop is free, but you must register in advance. More details are are available in our media release which you can download in MS Word or Adobe PDF formats.

 

6 July 2007 - Our latest Community Update newsletter released

We are aware that some organisations will have suffered losses during the floods, and they may be able to obtain a grant to assist with replacement equipment. Check the Grants and Club Finances section of Community Update.

25 June 2007 - Can you help us help you?

GippSport works in a service and support role for clubs and associations throughout Gippsland. We send out regular newsletters and grant information to those on our lists.

To ensure our records are up to date and you get relevant information, we have provided a contact update form which you can download and return. It is available in MS Word format (122 kB) or Acrobat PDF format (35 kB). You can send the form back by post (there's a free reply address on the form), or by fax.

 

14 June 2007 - GippSport to provide Access for All Abilities Program

GippSport will provide the Access for All Abilities Program (AAA) throughout Gippsland commencing next month. The aim of the program is to build the capacity of the sport and recreation sector to provide increased active participation opportunities for people with disabilities.

GippSport is presently making plans and arrangements to ensure a continuity of AAA services and program activities.

 

14 June 2007 - GippSport positions vacant - Access for All Abilities Project Officers

Two Project Officers positions are now open, one each at Moe and Bairnsdale. The work involves organisation and liaison for the provision of AAA services and programs.

 

14 June 2007 - The "Get Active" message

For those keen on the promotion of healthy activity, mark 3 July in your calendar for the "Be Active" Expo at Trafalgar Secondary School. It is particularly aimed at organisations, community groups, and even businesses seeking information on accessing and promoting physical activities. (See our Calendar for details.)

Also, the Latrobe Community Health Service has launched its Working Well Manual, to assist the implementation of healthy and active workplace strategies. For more information or a copy of the Manual, contact Rachel Dooley on (03) 51365400.

 

25 May 2007 - Grants Planning Roadshow in Wellington

Two Victorian government departments are conducting four information sessions in Wellington Shire on 19 and 20 June. The "Roadshow" provides information to local clubs and community groups on grants that are available, and how to develop and extend their organisations using available resources.

 

22 May 2007 - Advanced Coaching Scholarship for Women

Applications close this week, Friday 25 May. Sports covered are athletics, golf, rowing and swimming. Funding and support are provided through the VIS. For more information and names of contact people for each sport, contact GippSport.

 

21 May 2007 - May edition of our newsletter Community Update, released

Our latest Community Update is now available. Once again, we have listed a number of grants opportunities and other news for clubs.

GippSport is pleased to have released the first of two Fact Sheets. They are about arranging reunions, and the requirements for fund-raising through donations and raffles. You can link to the Fact Sheets from Community Update or our Club Development page, where other club resources are also listed.

 

9 May 2007 - Coaches and officials - recognising their contributions

Coaches and officials contribute their valuable time, effort and expertise to help participants enjoy their sport and develop their skills.

To help recognise and reward their efforts, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has created The Club Recognition Kit which includes certificates, awards and ideas for retaining volunteers. The ASC also has 500 free presentation memory sticks and whistles that can be used to reward a coach or official in your club.

 

9 May 2007 - WorkSafe Club Safety Grants available for football and netball

The grants are to improve safety for fotball or netball clubs. Closing date is 31 August. Application details were available from www.vcfl.com.au and www.netballvic.com.au (link no longer available).

3 May 2007 - Sport Leadership Grants for Women

The Australian Government has opened the 2007/08 Sport Leadership Grants for Women. Grants may be to develop skills in coaching, officiating, management/administration, governance (boards and committees).

Applications close 29 June. More details are provided on our Grants currently on offer page.

 

24 April 2007 - Regional Challenge for Juniors: Victoria's best at Traralgon

The 2007 Tennis Association - Regional Teams Challenge will be played at Traralgon on 9 - 11 June 2007 commencing at 9.00 am. 

This is a chance to see teams from all over Victoria playing for the 12 and under, 14 and under and 16 and under titles. 

There will be local talent playing as both East Gippsland and Central Gippsland will have teams in all age groups.  This is where future champions come from!

 

18 April 2007 - Effective Meetings, seminar to be held in Warragul

Do you find that sometimes your meetings go round in circles and that decision making is difficult? Would you like to develop new skills about making your meetings more effective?

Baw Baw Shire is sponsoring a seminar on effective meetings for people who work in or with community groups and service organisations.

It will be held on 16 May in the Fountain Room, West Gippsland Arts Centre, Warragul from 6:30 to 9pm.

18 April 2007 - Boccia try-out planned for Wonthaggi

A "Come and Try Day" for boccia will be held in Wonthaggi next month.

Boccia is an indoor sport for players of all abilities and is similar to the European game of bocce. Soft coloured balls are used, and they can be thrown, kicked or rolled by a ramp. Nearest to the "jack" is the winner.

The "Come and Try Day" for will be held at the Wonthaggi YMCA, Monday 7 May from 10am to 12pm.

 

13 April 2007 - New, free, on-line sports publication

Sport & Sponsorship News Australia has established a new on-line resource, the Sports Administrator Network (SAN). The publication provides news and information about sports administration and is free.

Local clubs may find interesting news and ideas from their own or other sports. SAN includes some useful services including a weekly e-News alert, an archive search function, and an announcements section for clubs to post to.

 

13 April 2007 - Cancellation of Melbourne Victory Gala Day

Unfortunately, due to Melbourne Victory player commitments, the Gippsland Soccer League has had to cancel the Gala Day scheduled for Saturday 14th April.

 

2 April 2007 - Up to 50% of injuries are preventable ... but how?

Smartplay has recently developed six new sport-specific fact sheets. Using research from Monash University Accident Research Centre, these fact sheets aim to help people prepare for sport and offer helpful advice on how to reduce injury risk.

The new fact sheets are for running, cricket, soccer, Australian rules, netball and basketball. They outline the principles of good preparation, correct technique and practices, wearing protective equipment and checking the sporting environment.

The new injury fact sheets bring the total number of sports now covered to over 20. Download them from here, or request hard copies from Smartplay ph. 9674 8777 or by email smartplay@vic.sma.org.au

 

30 March 2007 - March newsletter released

Our latest "Community Update" is now available. You can access it from our menu or link here.

It includes our usual news, with a larger-than-usual list of club grants and financial opportunities.

Congratulations to Swifts Creek Tennis Club who were the lucky responders to our newsletter survey. Also, our special thanks to all those who have replied and given us useful information and ideas.

The Lakes Entrance Croquet Club has a novel way to overcome not having a club room: they use a 'notice tree'.

26 March 2007 - Stewart Edwards wins GippSport Scholarship

Stewart, a student at GippsTAFE in the Sports Administration program, has won the annual GippSport Sports Administration Encouragement Scholarship.

Stewart was presented his scholarship cheque and plaque at the recent GippsTAFE Industry Awards evening.

Congratulations Stewart!

 

23 March 2007 - Keep Fit Don't Sit to be launched in schools: sports clubs invited

Clubs are invited to join in the program which will run in Latrobe Valley primary schools during the next term.

Key aspects of the program include commitments to school visits and clinics made by the Latrobe City Pacers (basketball team), activity recording by students over a 2-week period, and the opportunity for clubs from other sports to be involved in clinics in their local area.

20 February 2007 - Links page added, to help you find local resources

We have added a new links page to our site. The page is designed to help you find sporting associations - many of which provide information about regional bodies and local clubs - and the store resources provided or linked within local government web sites.

You can find the page from our menu under "Resources".

 

15 February 2007 - Newsletter released

Our first Community Update for 2007 has been released. We cover the usual wide range of topics including, as always, club development and club grants and finances. You can link directly to it from here.

Amongst the courses on offer are several sports trainer courses being offered by Sports Medicine Australia. They will be at Wonthaggi and Morwell during April and May. You can link directly to the Seminars and Training section of the newsletter.

We also have a number of Responsible Servicing of Alcohol courses listed. These are provided under the Good Sports Program, and have already attracted a strong interest. If you wish to attend, please be aware that most have limited places and that further courses will follow later. Link here.
